Study Permit for International Students in Canada
Most international students who plan to study in Canada must hold a valid study permit. This document allows foreign nationals to enroll in designated learning institutions and remain in Canada for the duration of their studies.
Sometimes, students need more time to complete their program. Others may change institutions or enroll in a longer course. In these situations, students must apply to extend their study authorization before it expires.
When Do You Need a Study Permit Extension?
International students must apply for an extension if they plan to continue studying beyond the expiry date of their current permit. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) manages these applications.
Students should submit the extension request before the permit expires. Early submission helps avoid loss of legal status.
How to Apply for a Study Permit Extension
Students must submit most applications online, unless IRCC provides an exception. The Canadian government requires electronic submission for applications made from within Canada, including:
- Extensions of temporary resident status
- Applications for study or work permits
- Renewals of study or work permits
Planning is essential. Applying early prevents interruptions to study plans.
Implied Status While Waiting for a Decision
If a student submits the extension application before the permit expires, they may remain in Canada under implied status. This status allows them to continue studying until IRCC makes a decision.
However, implied status applies only if the student maintains the same permit conditions. If conditions change, the student must wait for approval before continuing studies.
What Happens If the Permit Expires?
Students who miss the deadline can apply to restore their status within 90 days of the expiry. During this period, they cannot study until IRCC approves the request.
In some cases, an extension may not be enough. Students who change their level of study, institution, or permit conditions may need to apply for a new study permit instead.
Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) and Re-Entry to Canada
Students from visa-required countries should monitor the validity of their Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). In many cases, the TRV expires on the same date as the study authorization.
Although students do not need a valid TRV to remain in Canada, they do need one to re-enter the country. Therefore, students who plan to travel abroad during their studies should renew their TRV in advance.
Quebec Study Permit Extension Requirements
International students in Quebec must hold:
- A valid study authorization, and
- A valid Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ)
If the CAQ expires before the program ends, students must apply for a new CAQ through Quebec’s immigration authority before continuing their studies.
