What is an Entry Clearance?

A United Kingdom entry clearance is a visa you must obtain before travelling. Even after securing entry clearance, you will go through immigration checks at a UK port of entry. Heathrow and Gatwick are common entry points. As long as your details remain accurate, immigration authorities generally allow entry. However, they may refuse entry if your circumstances have changed or if you provided false information.

Entry may be refused on medical or criminal grounds; alternatively, a deportation order or exceptional reason could result in refusal. Upon arrival in the UK, you may be questioned by an Immigration Officer. Be sure to carry all essential documents in your hand luggage.

Do I Need an Entry Clearance?

The Rules

How to Apply for a Student Entry Clearance

If you wish to apply for an entry clearance, you should complete form IM2A (and any related forms, if applicable), which you can obtain free of charge from the nearest British Mission offering an entry clearance service. You should check with the Mission to see whether they can process student applications. You can submit your application form either in person or by post, along with the following documents:

Your Passport

1. Two recent passport-sized photographs.
2. The entry clearance fee, which is non-refundable.
3. Any relevant diplomas or educational certificates that you hold.
4. A letter from the University, College or School confirming your acceptance for the course of study in the UK and a statement of charges for the course.
5. Evidence of Government sponsorship (if appropriate).
6. In certain countries, it may be inadvisable to send your passport through the post.
7. Fees must be paid in local currency (currency of the country in which the British Mission is located). You should not send cash by post; bank drafts, postal orders, or money orders payable to the Mission may be enclosed.
8. Evidence of funds to pay for your stay and your course of studies in the UK, or a letter from your host or sponsor in the UK to say that they will support and accommodate you during your course of studies, together with evidence that they can do so.
